Our Mission

To provide families who are experiencing homelessness with safe, temporary housing and supportive services to empower them to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency.

"Family House was a true blessing for us when we had nowhere else to turn. The staff welcomed us with open arms, providing a safe place to stay and a sense of hope when everything felt lost. Our case manager went above and beyond, connecting us to the resources we needed to get back on our feet. We’ll forever be grateful for the support and guidance we received during one of the hardest times in our lives."

Our History

Family House, located at 669 Indiana Avenue, was founded in 1985 by the African American ministers of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (IMA). Originally known as the Toledo Community Service Center, these ministers, along with their congregations, played an integral role in shaping the shelter’s early years. They not only provided financial support for the annual budget and essential furnishings but also volunteered their time by staying overnight with those in the shelter. Over time, this involvement transitioned to staff oversight, with local churches continuing to support Family House through volunteer efforts, donations, and financial contributions. Today, one of the founding ministers, Biahop Robert A. Culp continues to serve as an Honorary Board Member.

When Family House first opened, it welcomed both single women and families. However, in 1998, the Board of Directors made the decision to focus solely on family units, aligning with the organization’s mission and recognizing that other shelters in Lucas County could meet the needs of single women. Since then, Family House has been fully committed to preserving and supporting the family unit during times of crisis.

Over the years, the Board and staff recognized that many families were trapped in cycles of poverty, requiring more than just temporary shelter. In response, Family House expanded its services, developing comprehensive programs aimed at addressing the root causes of homelessness and equipping families with the tools they need to achieve long-term self-sufficiency.

Family House now provides not only for the immediate needs of families but also empowers them to regain independence. By fostering partnerships with other service providers, the organization creates a compassionate environment that respects and values all individuals, regardless of the circumstances that led to their homelessness. As an active member of the Toledo Area Alliance to End Homelessness (TAAEH), Family House collaborates with community partners to address Toledo’s homelessness challenges. For nearly 40 years, Family House has served as a vital lifeline for families in need, continually expanding its services, strengthening partnerships, and remaining dedicated to serving the community with dignity and respect. At Family House, we proudly serve families from across Northwestern Ohio and Southeastern Michigan, providing a safe haven as the largest family shelter in the region.
